Mental health support

Mental health problems can include lots of things - from the worries we all have as part of our everyday lives to serious long-term conditions.

Mental health problems are very common. About 1 in every 4 people in the UK each year have problems with their mental health.

Your mental health doesn't always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life.

Support for people in crisis

If you, or someone you know, is in immediate danger, call 999.

If you or someone else needs urgent help for a mental health issue, phone Mental Health Direct on 0300 555 1000 (24/7, 365 days a year).

Help is also available from NHS 111 (option 2).

Private counselling

If you want to find a private counsellor or therapist, the best way is to take a look at The Counselling Directory.

You can filter by the type of person you're looking for (their age, gender, ethnicity, faith, etc.), how much you can afford and where you live to find the right person for you.

Many counsellors offer discounts for those on low income or students.

Top tip: when you first meet a counsellor, you are often entitled to a free 10-15 minute chat with them to see if you get on. Speed date multiple different counsellors to find the right person for you!
