Healthy heart

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, happens your blood is pushing too hard against your artery walls too much of the time.

This Heart Health Month, there are lots of things you can do to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range and to keep your heart healthy.

How to keep your heart healthy

  • Know your numbers
  • Support your heart
  • Watch your Vital-5
  • Get your free NHS health check
  • Support your family
  • Find your community
  • Get CPR trained

A person uses a digital blood pressure monitor on a green table, surrounded by health-related pamphlets and promotional items.

Know your numbers

The first thing to know is what high blood pressure looks like, and what to do if it is high.

There are many local places where you can get a free blood pressure check.

Supporting your heart

There are 3 key ways you can support your heart:

  • What you eat
  • How you move
  • How you handle stress

How you eat

Small changes to what we eat help our hearts, help us lose weight, and give us more energy.

Three people in a kitchen prepare food together, smiling and chatting. An older woman wears an orange apron, while a younger woman and a man in a pink turban are also helping with the meal prep. Vegetables are on the counter.
A person using a Concept2 rowing machine outdoors, wearing a black t-shirt with the words "COOL ROWING" and "ADAPTIVE SPORTS & EXERCISES."

How you move

As little as two sessions of 10 minutes of exercise each day supports your heart, mind, and body.

How you handle stress

How we handle stress is just as important as how we move, or what we eat.

A woman in a wheelchair waters a garden with a hose, surrounded by blooming flowers and green plants on a sunny day.
An older man wearing glasses, a hat, and a green plaid shirt hangs laundry on a clothesline outdoors, with a wooden fence in the background.

Watch your Vital-5

Our Vital 5 cover a lot of the ways we keep healthy. Remembering to watch these 5 things in your day-to-day life is one of the easiest ways to make good changes that stick.

  1. Quit smoking with our help
  2. Drink alcohol safely
  3. Have a healthy blood pressure
  4. Keep your mind healthy
  5. Maintain a healthy weight

Get your NHS Health Check

If you are aged 40-74, you can get a free NHS Health Check.

An NHS Health Check usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and is carried out by a trained healthcare professional, like a nurse, pharmacist, or healthcare assistant.

At the end of the health check, you get tailored health advice.

Contact your GP practice to see if you can book your free NHS Health Check.

Two healthcare workers in uniforms stand outside a building, smiling and holding informational brochures. One wears sunglasses and a headscarf, while the other has a name badge that reads Lizzy.

Support your family

Starting the conversation with your family and friends is another important step. A small conversation can have a big impact.

Try starting the conversation like this…

amily of four preparing food in a bright kitchen with ingredients on the counter.

“When did you last have your blood pressure checked?”

“I had mine done at the pharmacy—it was quick and easy.”

“Did you know high blood pressure doesn’t always have symptoms?”

Find your community

There are lots of people making healthy hearts happen in Havering.

Find local support, activities and events near you where you can get support to have a healthy heart.
