The Prevent programme works to stop all kinds of terrorism that threatens the safety of local people, such as:
- Extreme right-wing terrorism (such as white supremacy)
- Extreme left-wing anarchist
- Single-issue terrorism - terrorism motivated by a very specific issue
- Islamist terrorism
- And more
These different terrorist groups may work together online on social media and online forums, or in-person.
Radicalisation is when a person begins to justify the use of violence because of a set of beliefs and is the start of terrorism. It is when a vulnerable person becomes attracted to individual groups or causes. These groups often exploit vulnerable people's trust, focus on their grievances or desires, and use political views or distorted religion to draw them in.
There are many factors that might make someone more likely to be radicalised, but it can happen to anyone.
Friends and family are best placed to spot the signs, so trust your instincts.
