Preventing radicalisation

The aim of the Prevent programme is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

Safeguarding adults and children is at the heart of the Prevent programme. We give people at risk support to divert people away from being drawn into terrorist activity.  Prevent supports people before any crimes are committed.

If you have heard or seen something that doesn't look right and that could be related to terrorism, report it online or call 0800 789321.

Types of terrorism

The Prevent programme works to stop all kinds of terrorism that threaten the safety of local people, such as:

  • Extreme right-wing terrorism (such as white supremacy)
  • Extreme left-wing anarchist
  • Single-issue terrorism - terrorism motivated by a very specific issue
  • Islamist terrorism
  • And more

These different terrorist groups may work together online on social media and online forums, or in-person.

Radicalisation is when a person begins to justify the use of violence because of a set of beliefs and is the start of terrorism. It is when a vulnerable person becoming attracted to individual groups or causes. These groups often exploit vulnerable people's trust, focus on their grievances or desires, and use political views or distorted religion to draw them in.

There are many factors that might make someone more likely to be radicalised, but it can happen to anyone.

Friends and family are best placed to spot the signs, so trust your instincts.
