Health visiting

Every child and family will get:

• Antenatal visit - a home visit when you're at approximately 28 weeks pregnant to look at your physical, emotional and mental health. The Health Visitor may talk to you about smoking, baby feeding and what to expect when you become a parent.

• Newborn Hearing Screening Programme - all parents in England can ask to have their child's hearing checked after birth.

• New birth visit - A nurse/ health visitor comes to your home soon after your baby is born. They check your baby’s weight and health and can support you with feeding, getting to know your baby, and understanding vaccines. They can give tips to keep your baby safe (like using car seats). You can also ask about things like sleep or colic.

• 6-8 week assessment - This check-in focuses on your baby’s development and your wellbeing as parents, including support for challenges such as postnatal depression. The Health Visitor may talk to you about baby feeding, vaccinations, sleep and other support available.

• 10 - 12 month health review This happens when the baby is between 9-12 months to talk about their growth, development and vaccinations. The Health Visitor may talk to you about your baby's needs, safety, feeding and dental health.

• 2-2 1/2 year health review - the Health Visitor will speak to you about your child's speech, behaviour and development. They will talk to you about getting ready for starting school and will connect you into local support services.
