GP practices

A GP is a local family doctor. You need to register with a GP even if you are not sick. This is so you can make an appointment with your GP if you become unwell. Anyone in Havering can register with a GP practice close to where they live for free.

How to register with a GP practice

To register with a GP, you can:

  • Go to your local GP practice and talk to the receptionist. They can help you register.

Why is it important to register with a GP practice?

It’s important to register with a GP before you become unwell. Being registered ensures you can get medical support when you need it. If you're not registered, it can be difficult to get the help you need during an illness.

Do you need documents to register for a GP practice?

It’s free to register and you do not need proof of address, immigration status, ID or an NHS number to register with a GP practice.

How do I see a GP at weekends or in the evenings?

If you're unable to book an appointment during the day or need to see a GP outside of normal hours, evening and weekend appointments are available through the out-of-hours service.

You can book these appointments by:

Calling your GP practice during opening hours (8am–6:30pm)
Calling NHS 111 when your GP is closed

This service is available to all patients and ensures you can access care when you need it most.

What services are there at GP practices?

Most GP practices offer a wide range of services to support your health and wellbeing, including:

  • General health appointments - to discuss any concerns or questions.
  • Prescriptions - Support with getting the medication you need.
  • Contraception advice - including coil or implant fittings at some practices.
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Additional wellbeing support – some practices have Social Prescribers, Health & Wellbeing Coaches, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, and other professionals who can help without needing a GP appointment first
  • Support to manage long-term conditions
  • Fit notes - for work or other needs.

Talk to your GP Practice to see what services you can get support from.

How much does it cost to see a GP?

It is completely free to register for a GP. It is also free to have an appointment with a GP.

If your GP says you need medication, they will give you a prescription that you can use at any local pharmacy. You often need to pay for prescriptions. The standard cost is £9.90 per item.

If you require many prescriptions, you may find it cheaper to purchase a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC). A PPC covers all your NHS prescriptions, including NHS dental prescriptions, no matter how many items you need. A PPC does not cover the cost of other health items, such as wigs and fabric supports.

  • A 3-month PPC costs £32.05 and will save you money if you need more than 3 prescribed items in 3 months.
  • A 12-month PPC costs £114.50 and will save you money if you need more than 11 prescribed items in a year.
  • A hormone replacement therapy (HRT) PPC costs £19.80 and will save you money if you need more than 2 prescribed qualifying HRT items in a year.

How do I make an appointment with a GP?

Every GP Practice has their own process. When you register with your GP Practice, you can ask them how to book an appointment. All GP practices should let you book an appointment online, on the phone, or in-person at the practice.

You can use the NHS App to book same day or future appointments.

If you need support getting online, AgeUK can help.

How do I order a repeat prescription?

Every GP Practice does this differently. You may need to:

  • Submit a request via the NHS App (the app can be downloaded onto your smartphone or tablet).
  • Drop a handwritten request to your GP.
  • Ask your practice for other options.

Contact your GP practice to find out how to do this at your practice.
