Keeping your home warm

A cold home can make you feel unwell. Keep the rooms you use most warm by turning on the heating and keeping them at 18°C or warmer. Try our simple tips to help keep your home warm this winter.

1. Heating your home and reducing energy costs

Havering Energy Doctors

Age UK Redbridge, Barking and Havering offers a free service for Havering residents aged 18 and over to help make their homes more energy efficient.

You can get a free home visit from an Energy Expert. They will check how energy efficient your home is and give you simple advice on how to save energy and keep your home warm.

3. Block draughts

There may be small gaps underneath your doors or between your windows letting your heating out or letting cold air in.

You can buy or make a draught excluder and close your curtains in the evening to help block draughts.

Don’t fit any new draught proofing in a room that doesn’t have enough ventilation or where there’s already a condensation problem.

If you’re getting a professional to fit insulation, draught proofing, or getting new windows or doors, ask them what they’re including to maintain good ventilation. This is because insulation can cause mould growth.

4. Visit Havering's Warm Spaces

Warm Spaces are heated, safe and friendly places. They are free to use if you are struggling to heat your home.

Havering Council have set up a network of Warm Spaces across the borough for the winter. These include libraries, leisure centres, community centres and community hubs.

Some venues also offer hot drinks, activities, and other services such as free Wi-Fi.
